Exactly two years ago today Hunter/Jumper rider Emily Karp, 21, suffered serious injuries when she fell from her horse while schooling over a grid of cavaletti. She sustained nerve damage to C5-6-7 in her neck which left her paralyzed in a wheelchair and needing to learn to walk again. Doctors told her parents: “Your daughter was this close to being paralyzed for the rest of her life.” However, it wasn’t long before her desire to get back on the horse again motivated her to ride her old faithful Morgan rescue When In Rome or “Romeo”—a Morgan pony rescue, who she knew would be safe to get her started again. The long road of rehab and recovery began but it wasn’t long after the accident that Emily decided that she wanted to turn professional; not even a frightening accident was going to deter her from doing what she loved. Now two years later and she has begun showing in hunters again with her mare H.E. Regality.
